What to know about photos for DS-160
Why must the photo be square?
The digital DS-160 form accepts only a square photo, 600×600 to 1200×1200 px. This is the State Department standard. It doesn't affect the paper version (5×5 cm / 2×2 inch) — that ratio is automatically square.
Can I wear glasses?
Since 2016 — not allowed. The only exception is with a medical document (e.g. after eye surgery). Otherwise the photo will be rejected.
What background is required?
White or slightly cream, no shadows or patterns. On a yellow, gray, or blue background the photo will be rejected.
How recent must the photo be?
No older than 6 months as of the submission date. Try not to use a 5-year-old passport photo.
Do you store my photo?
No. The check runs in server memory, the file is not written to disk and not shared with third parties. Once the result is shown, it disappears.
